Online or Mobile Purchases

  • Merchants that accept credit cards and debit cards are assigned a merchant category code (MCC) by the payment networks based on the kinds of products and services they sell. Online and mobile merchants use merchant codes and/or other identifying information that we rely upon to identify them as a qualifying online or mobile merchant. While these identifiers are generally reliable and accurate, there are times when an online or mobile merchant uses a merchant code that does not properly identify themselves. Green Dot Bank does not determine which MCC a merchant chooses to classify itself as and has no way of changing a merchant's identifying information that we receive during the authorization and posting process. Therefore, some online or mobile purchases may come across as some other type of non-qualifying transaction. While we strive to make sure we are accurate and inclusive of all the major online and mobile merchants, there could be times when a transaction is coded incorrectly by the merchant and cash back is not applied. When this happens, Green Dot will not be able to apply the 2% cash back for that transaction. Additionally, we are not able to provide cash back on airline tickets or on products and services that are redeemable for cash, like gift cards, online funding of accounts, credit card cash advances, P2P funding, prepaid cards, money orders, traveler's checks and similar products or merchants that primarily sell cash services.

  • The table below shows the fees that apply to the Green Dot Visa® Debit Card. The fee schedule below describes the fees associated with our accounts and services. We may offer additional products, services and features from time to time, and the fees for those offerings will be disclosed to you at the time they are offered. In addition to the fees listed below, there are some situations where a third party may charge additional fees. For example, when you use an ATM you may be charged a fee by the ATM operator in addition to our fee.

    *Your Monthly Fee will be waived if you direct deposit $500 or more into your Green Dot Visa® Debit Card in the previous monthly period.
    **You may also be charged a fee by the ATM operator in addition to our fee (and you may be charged a fee for a balance inquiry even if you do not complete a fund transfer).
    ***This fee is in addition to any other fee that may apply to your transaction. Please note use of your debit card outside of the U.S. may be limited; See your Account Agreement for more information.
    ****A one-time fee of $7.95 is assessed if there is no activity on the account 90 days after purchase of the card.

    The Green Dot Visa® Debit Card comes with a variety of features to help you manage your money and save on fees. For instance, the Monthly Maintenance Fee can be waived if you direct deposit at least $500 during the previous monthly period. There are also no bank transfer fees of any kind. Plus, we make your money from direct deposit available fast. Get your pay up to 2 days before payday and your federal benefits up to 4 days before benefits day.

    Direct deposit early availability depends on timing of payor’s payment instructions and fraud prevention restrictions may apply. As such, the availability or timing of early direct deposit may vary from pay period to pay period. Make sure the name and social security number on file with your employer or benefits provider matches what’s on your Green Dot account exactly. Green Dot will not be able to deposit your payment if we are unable to match recipients.

  • The card you purchased at a store is a temporary card and is not personalized with your name nor has your address associated with the account. When you register your card, we verify your identity and a new card personalized with your name will be sent in the mail. When your personalized card arrives in the mail, activation, online access, mobile number are required to access all features that the account offers. For instance, when you activate your Green Dot Visa® Debit Card, you’ll be able to deposit checks or add cash using the Green Dot app, pay bills, order paper checks and more!

  • No, a Green Dot Visa® Debit Card can’t help improve your credit because the account does not have a credit line attached to it like a credit card. But a Green Dot Visa® Debit Card can be very helpful for money management.

  • Your Green Dot Visa® Debit Card comes with a variety of mobile banking features including mobile check deposit, online bill pay, cash deposits using the Green Dot app and sending money to another Green Dot account. Set up your new Green Dot Visa® Debit Card on your phone to use with Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay so you can “tap and spend” (where mobile payments are accepted) and also easily make mobile purchases (where Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay are accepted). Of course, you can always use your physical Green Dot Visa® Debit Card at stores and ATMs where Visa® debit is accepted!

  • You can send money to anyone in the U.S. with a Green Dot account as long as you have a valid email address or mobile phone number for the recipient.

    1. Log in and navigate to Pay, then select Send Money.
    2. Enter the recipient’s name, email address or mobile phone number, memo, and the amount to send.
    3. Hit “Next” to review the information before selecting “Send Money” to complete the transaction.
  • The Green Dot Money Vault is a FREE feature that allows you to set aside cash for a rainy day or a specific goal. Use it to stash cash for safe keeping, emergencies, or future purchases (like gifts for loved ones)! Money in your Vault cannot be spent on purchases or cash withdrawals and does not earn interest. You can move funds in and out of your Vault to your Visa® Debit Card account balance as often as you like, subject to security limits. There are no additional fees to use the Vault, but money in your Vault does not earn interest.

  • After activating your Green Dot Visa® Debit Card and setting up direct deposit, you may be eligible to receive your pay up to 2 days early or government benefits up to 4 days before benefits day (subject to deposit verification and depending on your payment provider’s process and timing).

    Some employers and benefits providers send payment instructions ahead of the actual payday. If they do, we’ll credit the amount to your account when we receive payment instructions (instead of waiting for the actual payday) so you can enjoy your money sooner. However, it’s important to note that if and how early your deposit can be posted to your account is completely dependent on when the employer or benefits provider sends us the payment instructions and fraud restrictions may apply. As such, the availability or timing of early direct deposit may vary from pay period to pay period. Make sure the name and social security number on file with your employer or benefits provider matches what’s on your Green Dot account exactly. Green Dot will not be able to deposit your payment if we are unable to match recipients.

  • Your Green Dot debit card can be used as either a debit or credit transaction. Debit transactions will require a Personal Identification Number (PIN), so only use this option if you already have a PIN set up.

  • Upon successful completion of registration of your Visa® Debit Card, you can use your card to make purchases everywhere Visa® debit is accepted in the U.S.
