Gather what you need to file as early as possible

  • Full name (the name on your tax forms must match the name on your Green Dot debit card)
  • Date of birth and Social Security number (for yourself and anyone included on your tax return)
  • Green Dot bank routing and account numbers
    Log in to your account to get your routing and account numbers.
  • W-2 forms
  • Explore any tax credits or deductions you can claim      
    Visit https://www.irs.gov/credits-and-deductions-for-individuals
  • Childcare records
    (including the provider’s tax ID number (if applicable))
  • Any 1099 forms, Letter 6419 (Advance Child Tax Credit), and Letter 6475 (Third Economic Impact Payment), if applicable

How to direct deposit your federal and state tax refund

Setting up direct deposit is easy!
Text DD to 42586 or log in to your account to get your bank routing and account numbers.

Enter your routing and account numbers on your tax forms
Mark “Checking” on your tax form. Be sure the name on your tax forms matches the name on your Green Dot debit card.

File your return
Green Dot does not receive information on the status of your tax refund. For federal tax refund status, call the IRS Refund Hotline (800) 829-1954 or visit IRS.gov. For state tax refund status, visit irs.gov/tax-professionals/government-sites.

Important dates to know

For the tax year 2025 (to be filed in 2026), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has set important deadlines that taxpayers need to be aware of. Here are the significant dates:

  • January 1, 2026: The official start of the tax year.
  • Late January, 2026: The IRS has not yet announced an official tax year 2025 start date, but the agency typically starts accepting and processing income tax returns in late January.
  • April 15, 2026: Filing deadline.
  • October 15, 2026: Extension deadline.

Get status on your federal tax refund at: https://www.irs.gov/refunds or call (800) 829-1954.
Get status on your state tax refund at: irs.gov/tax-professionals/government-sites.

Get notified with a text or email when your refund hits your account

Log in to the Green Dot app. Go to Transactions to check if direct deposit was received. Go to Settings, then Notifications.
Select the method of notification for Direct Deposit Posted. Message and data rates may apply.
